MEXT Scholarship 2026: What Nepali Students Need to Know

The MEXT (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) scholarship is one of the most generous fully funded scholarships available to Nepali students. Every year, 20-30 Nepali students are selected through the Embassy recommendation route. Here is everything you need to know to apply for the 2026 intake.

2026 Scholarship Benefits

  • Full tuition exemption at Japanese national, public, or private universities
  • Monthly stipend: approximately JPY 143,000 for research students (roughly NPR 135,000/month) and JPY 117,000 for undergraduate students
  • Round-trip economy airfare from Nepal to Japan
  • No entrance examination or admission fees
  • Additional regional allowance for students in designated areas

Eligibility for Nepali Students

There are several categories, but the most popular among Nepali students are:

  • Research Students: Must be born on or after April 2, 1991 (under 35 years old). Must hold a Bachelor's degree or be expected to graduate before departure. Minimum GPA of 2.3/3.0 (approximately 60%). Must be willing to learn Japanese and study in Japan.
  • Undergraduate Students: Must be born on or after April 2, 2001 (under 25 years old). Must have completed 12 years of schooling (+2 or equivalent). Strong academic record required.

You must be a Nepali citizen, not hold Japanese nationality, and be physically and mentally healthy. Military personnel on active duty are not eligible.

Required Documents

  • Application form (available from the Embassy)
  • Field of Study and Research Plan (the most critical document for research students)
  • Academic transcripts from all previous institutions
  • Graduation certificate or expected graduation letter
  • Recommendation letters from two academic supervisors
  • Passport-sized photographs
  • Certificate of health (medical examination)
  • JLPT or IELTS/TOEFL certificates if available (not mandatory but helpful)

How to Write a Winning Research Proposal

The Field of Study and Research Plan is the single most important document in your MEXT application. Here is how to make it strong:

  • Be specific: Do not write vaguely about wanting to study engineering. State exactly what problem you want to research, your methodology, and expected outcomes.
  • Connect to Japan: Explain why your research needs to be done in Japan specifically. Reference Japanese research groups, technology, or resources that are unique to Japan.
  • Show feasibility: Your research plan should be achievable within the scholarship period. Reference existing literature and explain how your work builds on it.
  • Nepal connection: Briefly explain how your research will benefit Nepal when you return. MEXT values scholars who contribute to their home countries.
  • Contact professors: Before applying, email potential supervisors at Japanese universities. A professor who expresses interest in supervising you significantly strengthens your application.

Embassy Exam Preparation Tips

The written exams are the first major hurdle. For research students:

  • English exam: Similar to a university-level English proficiency test. Practice reading comprehension and essay writing.
  • Japanese exam: Basic level. Even if your Japanese is minimal, attempt it — showing effort matters. Start learning hiragana and katakana now.
  • Subject exam: Covers fundamentals of your field. For engineering students, review calculus, physics, and your specialization basics. Past papers are sometimes available at the Embassy.

Interview Tips

If you pass the written exams, you will be called for an interview at the Embassy. Tips:

  • Be clear about your research goals and why Japan is the right place
  • Know your research plan inside out — expect detailed questions
  • Show enthusiasm for Japanese culture and language learning
  • Dress formally and arrive early
  • Be honest about your strengths and limitations

After Selection

If selected, MEXT will place you at a Japanese university based on your research interests. You may start as a Research Student (non-degree) and then take entrance exams to enter a Masters or PhD program. The scholarship covers your entire study period — typically 2 years for Masters and 3 years for PhD, plus an initial 6-month to 1-year preparatory period.
