Application Process

We have streamlined the study abroad application process into clear, manageable steps. Our team guides you through each stage to maximize your chances of admission.

1

Research & Select Universities

Before applying for Chevening, research and apply to UK universities for your chosen Masters program. Chevening requires you to have at least 3 unconditional university offers by the offer deadline. Start this process early — apply to universities from September onwards.

2

Submit Chevening Application

The online application opens in September and closes in early November. Complete the application form on the Chevening website, which includes 4 essay questions covering leadership, networking, career plan, and why you chose your specific courses. These essays are the most important part of your application.

3

Shortlisting

Applications are reviewed by the British Embassy in Kathmandu. Shortlisted candidates are notified around February-March of the following year.

4

Interview

Shortlisted candidates are interviewed by a panel at the British Embassy in Kathmandu (March-April). The interview assesses leadership, communication, clarity of career plan, and how Chevening will help you achieve your goals. Dress professionally and prepare specific examples.

5

Conditional Offer & University Confirmation

If selected (notification around June-July), you receive a conditional offer. You must then confirm your chosen UK university, meet English language requirements, and submit all final documentation.

6

Pre-Departure & Arrival

Attend a pre-departure event in Kathmandu. Arrive in the UK in September for orientation. Chevening scholars attend networking events throughout the year, including a welcome event and a farewell ceremony.

Costs & Scholarships

Understanding the financial commitment is crucial for planning your study abroad journey. Here is a breakdown of typical costs and available funding options.

Tuition Range
GBP 0 (fully covered up to programme fee)

Chevening covers tuition fees up to the standard programme fee. Most Masters courses are fully covered. Some courses at top universities (e.g., certain MBA programs) may exceed the cap, requiring a contribution from the university or student.

Scholarships
This IS the scholarship

Chevening is a comprehensive package. Beyond tuition and living allowance, it includes return flights, an arrival allowance, a thesis/dissertation allowance, a homeward travel grant, and study travel for academic purposes within the UK.

Costs are estimates and vary by university and city. Call +977-9849998031 or fill out the form for personalized cost estimates based on your preferred universities.

Student Life

Studying abroad is about more than just academics. Here is what you can expect from life as an international student.

The UK offers a world-class academic experience with centuries of intellectual tradition. UK Masters programs are intensive — most are only 1 year long, with taught modules from September to June and a dissertation submitted in September. This makes Chevening one of the most time-efficient fully funded scholarships.

As a Chevening scholar, you are part of an exclusive cohort. You attend networking events with other Chevening scholars, UK policymakers, business leaders, and academics. These connections often prove as valuable as the degree itself. The global Chevening alumni network includes heads of state, ambassadors, CEOs, and ministers.

The Nepali community in the UK is well-established, particularly in London, Manchester, and Reading. You will find Nepali restaurants, cultural organizations, and a supportive community that celebrates Dashain and Tihar. UK universities also have active student societies and clubs, sports teams, and social events.

Chevening Scholarship — UK — Frequently Asked Questions

What do Chevening essay questions ask?
Chevening requires 4 essays (approximately 500 words each): 1) Leadership and Influence — describe a situation where you showed leadership. 2) Networking — describe how you build and maintain professional relationships. 3) Career Plan — outline your immediate and long-term career goals and how Chevening fits. 4) Studying in the UK — explain why you chose your specific courses at your chosen universities. The essays are heavily weighted in the selection process. Be specific, use concrete examples, and show genuine reflection.
How important is work experience for Chevening?
Work experience is essential. Chevening requires a minimum of 2 years (2,800 hours), which can include full-time employment, part-time work, or voluntary work. However, competitive candidates typically have 3-7 years of relevant professional experience. Your work experience should demonstrate leadership, initiative, and impact in your field. Fresh graduates with minimal work experience are unlikely to be successful.
Can I stay in the UK after completing Chevening?
Chevening expects scholars to return to their home country. You must leave the UK within a reasonable period after your course ends. Unlike the Australia Awards, there is no formal minimum return period, but the scholarship is designed to support future leaders in their home countries. Many Chevening alumni go on to influential positions in Nepal's government, NGOs, private sector, and international organizations.
How many Nepali students receive Chevening each year?
The exact number varies by year, but Nepal typically receives 5-15 Chevening awards annually. The number depends on budget allocations and the quality of the applicant pool. Nepal has a strong track record with Chevening, and many Nepali Chevening alumni hold prominent positions in government, civil society, and the private sector.
Do I need to have IELTS before applying?
You can apply for Chevening before having your IELTS results. The English language requirement can be met later in the process — typically by April-May of the year you would start studying. The requirement is IELTS 6.5 overall with no band below 5.5, or equivalent TOEFL/PTE scores. However, we recommend taking IELTS early so you can focus on the essay and interview preparation.
